Picasso, Miró and Dalí reinvent the book as a work of art at the MFA in Boston
Far from conceiving of the book as a mere medium for text, the great artists of the 20th-century avant-garde transformed it into a space for aesthetic experimentation. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, dedicates the exhibition Picasso, Miró, Dalí: Unbound to this unique creative territory, focusing on livres d'artistes , publications in which image, word, typography, and design merge into an indivisible artistic proposition. The exhibition will be on view from August 1, 2026, to January 24, 2027.
The exhibition brings together some of the most outstanding contributions of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí to this genre, which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century as a break with traditional publishing conventions. More than just illustrated books, these works are true works of art in which every element—from the paper and typography to the printing techniques—participates in a single visual discourse. The exhibition underscores how the book ceased to be a mere container and became a space for autonomous creation.
One of the most compelling aspects of the MFA's proposal is its emphasis on the deeply collaborative nature of these projects. Contrary to the image of the artist as a solitary creator, livres d'artiste emerged from the dialogue between painters, writers, editors, designers, and printers. This interaction resulted in works where the boundaries between disciplines dissolve, creating an unusual balance between literature and the visual arts.
Among the most outstanding pieces is Salvador Dalí's 1974 interpretation of Sigmund Freud's essay, Moses and Monotheism , where the artist's surrealist imagery offers a visual reading of Freudian thought that is as symbolic as it is unsettling. The exhibition also includes lesser-known collaborations, such as Au Soleil du Plafond , conceived by Juan Gris with the French poet Pierre Reverdy, a paradigmatic example of shared creation in which text and image spring from the same creative impulse.
From a critical perspective, the exhibition offers a particularly relevant reflection on the concept of authorship and the nature of the book as a work of art. In an era dominated by digital reproduction and the immediacy of the image, these volumes reaffirm the value of materiality, craftsmanship, and publishing understood as a creative process of enormous complexity. Each volume demands a deliberate reading, in which the viewer interprets not only words and images, but also visual rhythms, textures, and graphic silences.
