The KBr looks at Dana Lixenberg's America
The photography center of the MAPFRE Foundation will bring together, from October 1 to January 17, 2027, a major retrospective of the Dutch photographer and the sixth edition of the project dedicated to new creators trained in Barcelona.
The KBr Photography Center in Barcelona will inaugurate a new exhibition season on October 1st, marked by the social commitment of contemporary photography and its commitment to new visual languages. Until January 17th, 2027, the center will present two complementary proposals: American Images , the major retrospective dedicated to Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg, and KBr Flama'26, the sixth edition of the project that gives visibility to emerging photographers trained in the main photography schools in Barcelona.
Internationally recognized for a career spanning over thirty years, Dana Lixenberg (Amsterdam, 1964) has developed a body of work focused on people and communities that are often left out of the grand narrative. Her work is characterized by a direct, respectful, and non-stereotypical gaze, capable of transforming documentary photography into a tool for exploring the relationships between identity, memory, and belonging.
The exhibition American Images explores some of his most significant projects dedicated to contemporary American society. The tour includes emblematic works such as Imperial Courts, begun after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, as well as series made in Jeffersonville (Indiana) and Shishmaref (Alaska), territories that reveal different social realities in the United States. The show is completed with an installation made up of his Polaroids, which allows us to delve deeper into the artist's creative process.
Lixenberg's photographs offer a portrait of great visual and emotional intensity on issues that continue to shape the present, such as social inequalities, the construction of identity, the sense of community and the capacity for resilience in the face of adversity. Jointly organized by the MAPFRE Foundation and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), the exhibition has been curated by Laurie Hurwitz and Marcel Feil.

In parallel, space 2 of the KBr will host KBr Flama'26, a consolidated initiative that focuses on creators who are beginning their professional careers after their time at reference centers such as Elisava - Faculty of Design and Engineering of Barcelona, the Serra i Abella School of Art and Superior Design, IDEP Barcelona and the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia (IEFC).
Curated this year by Carolina Ciuti, this sixth edition presents the projects of Sara Bravo (Girona, 1999), Elena Bulet i Llopis (Barcelona, 1999), Luca Gaetano Pira (Modena, 1987) and Meghan Mathews (Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1995), selected by a jury formed by Roser Cambray, Cristina de Middel and Carles Guerra.
