The Nits d'Art transform the Sant Ferran Castle into a great summer cultural stage
The Figueres heritage site is premiering a cycle that fuses visual arts, dance, music, theater, cinema and gastronomy, with nineteen participating artists and a special tribute to Pere Portabella coinciding with the filmmaker's centenary.
Within the monumental walls of the Sant Ferran Castle in Figueres, heritage is transformed this summer into a space for contemporary creation. From August 3 to September 1, the site is hosting the first edition of the Nits d'Art al Castell, a proposal that proposes six evenings in which the visual arts dialogue with dance, cinema, music and theatre in an environment of exceptional historical value. The project claims the castle not only as an architectural legacy, but also as a living space capable of hosting new cultural experiences under the summer sky.
The central axis of the program is El refugi de les arts , a collective exhibition curated by Lola Ventós that brings together nineteen creators with a plural perspective on contemporary creation. The show, which combines painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, features the participation of Antoni Federico, Antonio Nicolás, Assumpció Mateu, Carme Sanglas, Eudald de Juana, Joan Casellas, Joan Vilajoana, Joanjo Bosk, Josep Ministral, Juliette Murphy, Luis Izquierdo-Mosso, among others.
The inauguration, scheduled for August 3, will go beyond the opening of the exhibition. Dancer and choreographer Rober Gómez will present a creation specifically conceived to kick off the festival, highlighting the project's desire to generate a constant dialogue between the different artistic disciplines and the unique spaces of the castle.
One of the most outstanding moments will come on August 11, when the festival will join the Acció Portabella program, dedicated to commemorating the centenary of the filmmaker from Figueres, Pere Portabella. The day will culminate with the screening of El silenci abans de Bach , but before that there will be a concert starring the Trio Orlina —with the participation of the cellist who intervened in the filming of the film—, the Coral Germanor Empordanesa and the Rosinca mezzo-soprano Clàudia Schneider, a regular collaborator of Carlos Santos, co-writer of the film.
The heritage dimension of the project will take on a special role in this commemorative session, as both the concert and the screening will take place in the chapel of the castle prison, one of the spaces where scenes from the film were filmed. This coincidence turns the location into another element of the cultural story, reinforcing the relationship between memory, cinema and architecture.
Beyond the artistic programming, the Nits d'Art al Castell aspire to offer a comprehensive cultural experience in which heritage, contemporary creation, gastronomy and landscape share prominence. The festival was born with the desire to consolidate the Sant Ferran Castle as a new meeting point for the arts, converting one of the great fortified complexes in Europe into a stage open to contemporary culture during summer nights.
