Catalonia will commemorate twenty key figures and episodes of its collective memory in 2027
The official program of the Generalitat claims the return of Tarradellas, the recovery of self-government and the legacy of personalities from Catalan culture, science, politics and society.
The Generalitat of Catalonia has approved the official commemoration program for the year 2027, which will include twenty anniversaries intended to recover, disseminate and highlight historical episodes and personal trajectories that have contributed to the cultural, scientific, social and political development of the country.
The commemorative calendar will consist of four historical events and sixteen prominent personalities, with a proposal that maintains the parity criterion: eight women and eight men. The activities will have a clear territorial vocation, with proposals that will travel to different points of Catalonia and that will incorporate local perspectives linked to each figure and historical moment.
Among the most notable anniversaries is the 50th anniversary of the return of President Josep Tarradellas from exile and the process of recovering the institutions of self-government during the Democratic Transition. This commemoration will remember one of the fundamental episodes in the recent history of Catalonia, with activities focused on the recovery of the Generalitat after decades of dictatorship.
The program will also highlight key figures from various fields. Among them, the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Josep Trueta i Raspall, an internationally renowned physician and traumatologist, known for developing the Trueta method for treating wounds and author of The Spirit of Catalonia (1946). Exiled to the United Kingdom after the Civil War, he returned to Catalonia, where he died in 1977.
Carme Julià i Riqué, teacher, politician, union and anti-fascist activist, will also be remembered, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of her death. She was part of the leadership of the PSUC and the FETE-UGT, and lived in exile in France and later in Mexico.
The centenary of the birth of several personalities will be the focus of a large part of the program. Among them is Josep Maria Espinàs i Massip, a writer and journalist who turned his walking tours of Catalonia into a unique way of portraying the country. Co-founder of Els Setze Jutges and the La Campana publishing house, he was also co-author, with Jaume Picas, of the lyrics to the Barça Song .
The artistic field will have a prominent presence with the centenary of Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar, sculptor responsible for the sculptural ensemble of the Passion Façade of the Sagrada Família; Emília Xargay i Pagès, artist linked to the post-war Catalan avant-garde; Josep Guinovart i Bertran, one of the great names in Catalan contemporary art; and Ester Boix i Pons, painter and pedagogue committed to the renewal of artistic education.
Music will also be the protagonist with the centenaries of Rosa Sabater i Parera, a pianist trained in the tradition of Enric Granados; Oriol Martorell i Codina, founder of the Coral Sant Jordi and essential figure in the contemporary Catalan choral movement; and Montserrat Albet i Vila, musicologist and pianist, co-founder of the Catalan Society of Musicology and director of the Center for Musical Documentation of the Generalitat.
In the audiovisual and political field, the program will remember Pere Portabella i Ràfols, filmmaker, producer and politician fundamental to understanding contemporary Catalan cinema, producer of Luis Buñuel's Viridiana and director of films such as Umbracle or Informe general . The centenary of Joan Reventós i Carner, key figure of Catalan socialism during the Transition and president of the Parliament of Catalonia between 1995 and 1999, will also be celebrated.
Science and the defense of social rights will also have a prominent place. The Generalitat will pay tribute to Carmina Virgili i Rodón, the first female professor of Geology in Spain and a pioneer in the presence of women in science; Francesca Fontova i Rosell, the first woman to graduate in Medicine in the province of Lleida; and Cipriano García Sánchez, a trade unionist and politician linked to the Catalan labor movement and the foundation of the Workers' Committees of Catalonia.
The program will be completed with the memory of Remei Estéban Nin, teacher and cultural activist dedicated to the defense of the Catalan language; a pioneering figure in the municipal sphere and in the promotion of Catalan in El Vendrell.
