The change in leadership at ARCOmadrid is now official. Gonzalo Cabrera, current Director of Education and Culture at Ifema Madrid, will take over as director of the international contemporary art fair next October, following the departure of Maribel López , who will leave the position to become director of the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.

Ifema Madrid has announced the appointment, highlighting Cabrera's extensive experience in cultural management and his deep knowledge of contemporary art. The institution emphasizes his more than two decades of experience in developing cultural projects, during which he has spearheaded initiatives to support artists, galleries, and collectors, as well as promoting the acquisition of works for public collections and strengthening collaboration among museums, institutions, and art market stakeholders.

With this appointment, Ifema opens a new stage for ARCOmadrid with the aim of consolidating the international leadership of the fair, expanding opportunities for the sector and responding to the new challenges of the global ecosystem of contemporary art.

A graduate in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid, Cabrera completed his audiovisual training at the London Film Academy, the School of Visual Arts, and New York University. He began his professional career as a journalist at COPE and Antena 3 before joining Telefónica Spain, where he led strategic content projects for Movistar+. He later served as Director General of Cultural Promotion for the Community of Madrid and, since joining IFEMA, has headed the Education and Culture department. He also maintains close ties to the world of collecting, particularly in the field of photography.

Ifema also emphasized the continuity of the team that has supported Maribel López in recent years. The organization highlighted the experience of professionals such as Ruth Gómez, responsible for relations with national and international galleries; Mario Navarro, in charge of curated programs; Carmen Tasende, leading special projects, architecture, and sponsorships; Ana Álvarez, coordinator of the Forum and the Professional Program; Carmen del Peso, head of the Guest Program; Gori Gómez, responsible for relations with institutions and cultural spaces; and Pedro Vasconi, director of the ARCO Foundation.
