Caterina Miralles: the cracks of the city-spectacle

After her recent international screening in Cyprus , Caterina Miralles arrives in Barcelona with CCX221270-7.5 , a solo exhibition that can be visited at the Fuga space from June 25 to September 5, 2026, as part of the Art Nou festival. The exhibition dialogues in parallel with the work that the artist presents in the collective exhibition Glops at the Espai Isern Dalmau, expanding a research focused on the tensions between architecture, urban memory and representation.

Miralles' proposal starts from a fundamental question: to what extent does contemporary architecture operate as a monumental fiction? Based on the analysis of Barcelona's historic neighborhoods and the transformations associated with the construction of the so-called "Barcelona brand", the artist identifies the cracks in an urban narrative that has often prioritized tourist and speculative projection over the social dynamics that inhabit the city.

Far from reproducing a nostalgic look at heritage, Miralles works from the cracks. It is in these spaces of friction, resistance and contradiction that he places a critical revision marked by irony and a subtle satirical dimension. His works point out the mechanisms of urban make-up that have transformed certain historical areas into scenographies of cultural consumption, revealing their material and symbolic consequences.

The exhibition brings together large-format pieces with a strong installation vocation made with concrete canvas , an industrial material that directly refers to the processes of architectural coating and cladding. This material choice also becomes a metaphor for the gestures of covering, concealment and reconstruction that define many contemporary urban operations.

The tour is completed with editions, hand-made embroideries, drawings, archival materials, postcards and a video installation that documents unique spaces in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. Through these records, the artist traces an alternative cartography of a territory deeply intervened by speculative processes, recovering details, absences and traces that escape the official narrative of the city.

With CCX221270-7.5 , Caterina Miralles consolidates an artistic practice that combines research, critical observation and material experimentation to question dominant urban imaginaries. Her work not only points out the wounds of the contemporary city, but also turns these same cracks into spaces of reading, memory and resistance.
