On June 10, 2026, the Association of Friends of Josep Puig i Cadafalch made public its deep disappointment at the sale of the house where the architect and historian was born, located in Carreró de Mataró. This sale to individuals concludes a long period of citizen protest that has lasted more than fifteen years, during which several entities and individuals have asked the Mataró City Council to acquire the property to preserve the legacy of one of the most relevant figures in the city's history.
Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1867-1956) was a prominent architect of Modernism, a prestigious art historian and president of the Commonwealth of Catalonia between 1917 and 1923. His career has left a significant mark on Catalan and European culture. The sale of his birthplace represents, according to the association, an irreparable loss of a historic opportunity for Mataró, which could have had a space dedicated to his memory and the dissemination of his legacy.
The association's Board considers it incomprehensible that the City Council has not prioritized this acquisition, taking into account the good municipal economic situation and the repeated requests of citizens. The cost of acquiring the property was affordable and could have constituted the first step to obtain collaborations from other administrations to develop a cultural project of national interest.
Since 2007, several citizen movements have demanded the protection of the house, with initiatives such as the proposal to dedicate a House-Museum to Puig i Cadafalch, which was presented to the City Council plenary session and obtained the support of 44 entities and 850 individuals. Despite these requests, the City Council has not responded to the demands of civil society, which has expressed its desire to preserve this cultural heritage.
The resolution of the Association of Friends of Josep Puig i Cadafalch includes four key points: the expression of disappointment at the loss of this opportunity, the consideration that Mataró has missed out on recognizing a prominent figure in its history, an appeal to public administrations to increase efforts in preserving Puig i Cadafalch's legacy, and the association's commitment to continue promoting initiatives to publicize his work.
