Girona has approved the drafting of the first Master Plan for the wall, an initiative that seeks to protect and enhance this emblematic historical monument. The project, which has a total budget of 100,000 euros, receives half of its funding through a subsidy from the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The wall of Girona, which dates back to Roman times and has witnessed several construction phases over the centuries, needs a strategic plan that includes the necessary actions for its conservation, uses and accessibility. The mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, has highlighted the importance of this Plan as an instrument to define the future of the wall, which is considered an icon for the people of Girona.
The deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, Quim Ayats, added that the objective is not only to preserve the wall, but also to reconnect it with the city, allowing the population to rediscover it and feel it as part of their heritage. The Master Plan will compile knowledge about the wall and establish guidelines for restoration actions, with the aim of guaranteeing its structural stability and stopping the degradation of the space.
Among the planned actions, the Master Plan will first address urgent interventions in the medieval and Roman sections of the wall, then focus on the areas most in need of restoration. In addition, it is planned to improve accessibility, signage and the dissemination of heritage, incorporating digital elements such as information panels with QR codes.
A fundamental aspect of the Plan is the identification of the ownership of the monument, which is fragmented between various public and private entities. The City Council has already initiated the procedures to inform and coordinate with the institutional owners, such as the Bishopric of Girona and the University of Girona, to ensure coherent and respectful management of the heritage.
