“The filmmaker of our time”, this is how Roger Koza defined Radu Jude

From June 3 to July 12, the Filmoteca hosts a large retrospective dedicated to Radu Jude, one of the most relevant, singular and prolific figures in the current film scene. Organized in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute, the series offers an exceptional opportunity to explore a filmography that has become essential for understanding the aesthetic, political and cultural transformations of our time.

More than a chronicler of the present, Jude is a filmmaker who questions the very way the present is constructed and represented. His films address such current issues as labor exploitation, advertising culture, social networks or new forms of contemporary alienation, but they do so from a perspective that does not renounce memory or the critical revision of European history. His stories reveal how inherited discourses continue to shape current reality and invite the viewer to review dominant narratives from a critical perspective.

His work stands out for its unusual formal freedom. Jude combines fiction, documentary and visual essay in a cinematic proposal that transcends conventions and constantly explores new languages. His cinema incorporates archival materials, quotations, cultural references and experimental resources that dialogue with the mutations of the image in the digital age. This capacity to absorb and reinterpret contemporary visual codes makes his filmography one of the most stimulating and radical today.

Over the years, the director has built an incisive portrait of contemporary Romania, observed with a mixture of lucidity, irony and corrosive humor. Far from any cynicism, his films unfold a critical look at social inequalities, ideological mechanisms and tensions between past and present. Each new work represents a formal reinvention that confirms his will to challenge the expectations of the viewer and to explore the limits of cinematic language.

The retrospective will feature Radu Jude himself, who will present three of the scheduled sessions and give a master class, offering the public the opportunity to learn more about the creative processes and intellectual concerns that underlie his work. In addition, one of his most recent works, Dracula , will be part of the programming of the +RAIN Film Festival at Pompeu Fabra University, thus expanding the filmmaker's presence in the city.

This journey through his filmography allows us to discover a body of work that is as demanding as it is provocative, capable of turning cinema into a space for critical reflection on memory, representation and the contradictions of the contemporary world. An essential event for all those who understand cinema as a tool for thought and confrontation with our time.
