Gino Rubert and Jordi Alcaraz: contemporary dialogues with Manet

The influence of Édouard Manet continues to resonate strongly in contemporary art. Under the title D'après Manet , the Galerie Michael Haas in the German capital presents an ambitious exhibition featuring 51 international artists, most of whom have created works specifically for this occasion. The project does not simply seek to pay homage, but rather to initiate a vibrant dialogue with the past: quotations, reinterpretations, parodies, and stylistic shifts that open up new ways of seeing.

Considered one of the great transformers of modern painting, Manet spearheaded a radical and unexpected rupture in the 19th century. His work marked a turning point comparable, in cultural terms, to the changes brought about by the French Revolution. His way of representing reality—direct, challenging, and free from academic conventions—laid the foundations of pictorial modernity.

Today, his legacy is an undeniable part of global visual culture. The richness and diversity of his work remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration. However, accessing his original pieces is becoming increasingly difficult: most are in major museums and private collections, and the market has practically dried up.

Given this context, gallerist Michael Haas opted for an alternative approach: inviting contemporary artists to engage in direct dialogue with Manet. The result is a diverse and dynamic exhibition, where a wide range of artistic languages and sensibilities coexist. Among the participants are names such as Jordi Alcaraz, Nicole Bianchet, Peter Bömmels, Michael Craig-Martin, Tatjana Doll, Astrid Klein, Haruko Maeda, and Gino Rubert, among others. D'après Manet presents itself as an active exploration of the enduring relevance of art and its constant capacity for transformation. The works act as reinterpretations that distort and update Manet's creative impulse, returning it in new forms.
