Magda Bolumar, the thread that transforms matter into poetry
The Vayreda Foundation dedicates an exhibition to one of the most unique voices of Catalan informalism within the cycle Verònica. Visionary Women.
The art of Magda Bolumar fills the Vayreda Foundation in an exhibition that becomes the central axis of the cycle Verònica. Visionary Women , curated by Natàlia Chocarro. This exhibition, the second stop of the project, claims female trajectories marked by depth and material experimentation, tracing a journey that goes from the sixties to 2020 in Bolumar's work.
Born in Caldes d'Estrac, Bolumar develops a deeply personal abstract language from textile materials such as burlap, threads and ropes. Her works, known as 'xarpelleres', exceed the traditional limits of painting to become living surfaces, full of texture and relief, where matter takes center stage. Her visual universe evokes organic, almost microscopic forms, which dialogue with nature from a subtle and poetic balance.
Within the current of informalism, Magda Bolumar opens her own path. Far from the aggressiveness with which other artists manipulated materials, she weaves them with delicacy: she embroiders, braids and makes openwork to build light structures, like vibrant spider webs. Her compositions recall organic bodies floating in a silent, almost lunar space. And where others opt for the rawness of the naked material, Bolumar introduces color, transforming fiber into paint and creating an intimate, luminous and deeply sensitive language.
This commitment places her in her own territory within the Catalan avant-garde, especially relevant if we take into account the context of the dictatorship, in which few women managed to integrate into the most innovative artistic circles. As Natàlia Chocarro points out, the exhibition highlights “the enormous value of an artist capable of demonstrating great richness and precision in the treatment of material and language”.
Textile and experimental art, abstract and rooted in nature, Bolumar's work unfolds with a poetic and delicate tone that invites leisurely contemplation. The exhibition can be visited until July 5, offering a unique opportunity to rediscover an essential creator of Catalan contemporary art.
