Universal impulses or when painting and sculpture dialogue with the cosmos

A project by Assumpció Mateu and Josep Massana in the Chapel of Sant Joan in Vilafranca del Penedès.

Universal impulses or when painting and sculpture dialogue with the cosmos

An immersive installation is presented at the Capella de Sant Joan that proposes a total artistic experience, where painting and sculpture cease to be separate disciplines to become a single language. The project, entitled Pulsions universals , is born from the creative dialogue between the painter Assumpció Mateu and the sculptor Josep Massana, two creators who share the same concern: understanding the profound relationship between nature, the human being and the cosmos.

The exhibition space is completely transformed. The paintings not only occupy the walls, but also extend and release themselves into the air, suspended like fragments of an expanding universe. At the same time, the sculptures emerge from both the floor and the central space, generating a journey that forces the visitor to move within the work, not just to contemplate it.

The result is an enveloping landscape without clear boundaries, where the pictorial and sculptural matter seems to breathe to the rhythm of a common energy. The work invites us to stop and reflect on our condition: ephemeral beings, almost insignificant within the immensity of the cosmos, but at the same time deeply connected to all that exists.

The project starts from an essential idea: we are nature. There is no separation between humans and the universe, but continuity. This vision is translated into organic shapes, textures that evoke natural elements and a palette that suggests vital processes, as if each piece were an organism in constant transformation.

The collaboration between Mateu and Massana arises from a dialogue initiated remotely, through the networks, where they shared concerns, processes and materials. From this exchange was born an artistic complicity that now materializes in a common installation, without hierarchies between disciplines, where everything is part of the same visual and conceptual story.
