Interior Berlanga: an intimate journey into the cinema and life of the Spanish master
bonart zaragoza - 23/03/26

CaixaForum Zaragoza hosts the exhibition Interior Berlanga, Cinema, Life and Humor , an intimate and little-explored look at Luis García-Berlanga (1921-2010) that brings together an extensive unpublished archive of the Spanish filmmaker, made available to the public for the first time and which can be seen until July 26.

The exhibition explores the various facets of his life and work: from his filmography and international acclaim to his relationship with his fears, the historical context, and censorship. Through his films, the history of Spain is revealed, the problems with censorship are exposed, and more personal aspects such as his fears—fear of death, of the future, or of women—are addressed, recurring themes in his creative universe.

Berlanga developed his own unique language and universe, combining the unexpected, satire, local color, and caricature. The exhibition translates this imagery into a journey that culminates in a symbolic scenography inspired by a Valencian bonfire, where his obsessions, characters, and stories burn metaphorically and symbolically.

With an immersive experience and cinematic staging, the exhibition invites us to explore the life of one of the most important European filmmakers of the 20th century. It also includes a participatory and experimental space designed as a mini film class led by his son, José Luis García Berlanga, introducing techniques such as the tracking shot and the long take, fundamental to his work.

Beyond the tribute, the exhibition humanizes the filmmaker and proposes an active reflection to the visitor: to turn their own life into cinematic material, shifting the "lights, camera, action" towards everyday experience.
