The 2016 edition of ARCOmadrid has closed its doors with a resounding success, both in terms of attendance and commercial activity. The fair attracted 95,000 visitors and generated an estimated economic impact of €195 million, solidifying its position as one of the key events in the international contemporary art circuit.

The event, now in its 45th edition, also brought together nearly 40,000 professionals from the art sector worldwide, including collectors, curators, gallery owners, and directors of cultural institutions. In this context, the gallery owners present at the fair expressed their satisfaction with the results, while reiterating the need to move towards a reduced VAT rate for the art market, a long-standing demand of the sector.

The fair's director, Maribel López, described the event as "very positive," highlighting in particular the quality of the proposals presented by the galleries. According to López, the exhibited projects demonstrated "the courage and risk taken to explain what contemporary art is," appealing to both a specialized audience and the general public.

The fair, which officially opened on March 5, featured 211 galleries from 30 countries this year, showcasing works by approximately 1,300 artists. Furthermore, female participation reached 40%, according to data from the Women in the Visual Arts (MAV) report, an indicator that reflects progress—albeit still insufficient—in terms of representation in the art world.

Closing of Madrid Art Week 2026: ARCOmadrid as the central axis

At the heart of this intense week dedicated to contemporary art is ARCOmadrid, the fair that forms the backbone of the art calendar and sets the pulse of the city's cultural ecosystem. From the pavilions of IFEMA Madrid, the event captures the attention of the professional market and positions Madrid as one of the key hubs of the international art circuit.

Around the fair unfolds a parallel program of openings, professional meetings, and exhibitions that extend its reach beyond the fairgrounds. In this sense, ARCO functions as a true symbolic and temporal engine: it activates gallery programming, encourages the arrival of international collectors and agents, and creates the context in which other initiatives find coherence and visibility within Madrid's intense week of art.

Satellite trade fairs and new formats

Around this central hub, various fairs and independent projects act as extensions of the ecosystem generated by ARCO, multiplying the ways to engage with contemporary art from different parts of the city. Each one proposes its own curatorial approach , scale, and relationship with the public, shaping a diverse cultural map that is activated simultaneously.

Among the art fairs held in municipal spaces, Art Madrid stands out, taking place in the Crystal Gallery of the Cibeles Palace, an iconic venue in the heart of the city. The fair maintains a clear focus on contemporary art collecting and brings together national and international galleries in an accessible format that aims to broaden the appeal of the art market to a wider audience.

Also taking place in a municipal space is CAN Art Fair Madrid , located in Plaza Matadero. Now in its tenth edition, it has brought together more than fifty galleries, approximately half of them international. Its program is structured into different sections that explore specific lines of contemporary creation, including Counterflow, dedicated to unconventional artistic practices; CAN Design , focused on the dialogue between art and design; and Solo/Duo Projects , which presents solo projects promoted by emerging galleries.

Outside of municipal spaces, the diversity of initiatives continues to expand. JUSTMAD , usually held at the Palacio de Neptuno, maintains its commitment to emerging artists and curatorial approaches linked to new artistic practices, in an intimate format that fosters dialogue between artists, galleries, and visitors.

Hybrid Art Fair , held at the Hotel Petit Palace Santa Bárbara, occupies a different register. There, the hotel's rooms and common areas are transformed into site-specific installations, performances, and hybrid proposals that explore exhibition formats far removed from the traditional art fair model.

Meanwhile, Artist 360 , held at the Ilunion Pío XII Hotel, has proposed a more horizontal approach to artistic encounters, fostering direct contact between creators and the public and challenging the usual hierarchies of the art market. Together, all these initiatives contribute to creating a dynamic network that, for a few days, transforms Madrid into an expanded laboratory of contemporary art.
