The exhibition Avui 50+. Since 1976, news, language and country, can be visited at the Palau Robert from 24 February to 24 May 2026. The exhibition commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of the newspaper Avui, the first Catalan-language newspaper after the Civil War, and vindicates its role in the recovery of the language in the journalistic field. It is an initiative of Hermes Comunicació and the General Directorate of Dissemination, which has included the story and content of journalists Toni Brosa, Carles Sabaté and Jordi Panyella, the museography of Cristina Masferrer and the graphic design of Albert Planas and Manel Terrón.
The tour begins with the conception of the project, presented as a collective adventure marked by the determination to normalize the use of Catalan in the public sphere. It features unpublished material and documents of great historical value, as well as audiovisual treasures that reveal the process that culminated in April 1976. Since then, the newspaper has continued to be active and this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Structured in several thematic areas, the exhibition reviews the economic difficulties, social supports, cultural impact and the consolidation of its own communicative space, as well as the evolution of the newspaper over the decades and its influence on Catalan culture. The covers, photographs and testimonies collected show that the newspaper not only informed, but also actively participated in the construction of a collective conscience.
Beyond the commemoration, the exhibition invites us to reflect on the role of the media in shaping identity and language as a vehicle for democratic cohesion. Today 50+ thus becomes an exercise in memory and, at the same time, a look towards the future of journalism in Catalan, recalling its roots and its trajectory to the present day.
