MACBA director Elvira Dyangani Ose has informed the museum that she will be leaving her position at the beginning of April. Her departure will coincide with the closing of the exhibition Projecting a Black Planet. The Art and Culture of Pan-Africa , as well as the set of activities linked to this exhibition, which she herself has curated.
The decision comes after the MACBA Consortium, the museum's governing body, informed her that her current position is incompatible with the direction of the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial, for which she has been appointed, as she herself reported through her social networks just a month ago.
Elvira Dyangani Ose, who succeeded Ferran Barenblit, had held the position since 2021 and was the first woman and the first racialized person at the head of this institution dedicated to contemporary art.
As announced by MACBA, the criteria for choosing a new director will soon be made public. At the end of January, Elvira Dyangani Ose announced on her Instagram account her intention to combine the direction of MACBA with the artistic direction of the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial until next September, when her contract ends. However, the museum's governing bodies have considered that the position requires exclusive dedication.
