Cultural manager and exhibition curator Lluís Nacenta has been appointed the new director of the Barcelona Design Museum after winning the public competition called by the City Council. His appointment marks the beginning of a new stage at the helm of a key institution on the Barcelona cultural map, with the challenge of redefining its orientation and reinforcing its centrality in the contemporary debate on design.
Nacenta takes over from José Luis de Vicente, at the end of a mandate that raised critical voices from a part of the more academic sector, which called for a review of the museographic project and greater articulation with research and the professional fabric. His arrival closes the interim period opened in April of last year and opens a new cycle that is intended to be more integrative and transversal.
Nacenta's candidacy was assessed by the jury as the most solid in a competitive process that had to cover a strategic position within the city's museum ecosystem. The jury particularly highlighted her academic and professional versatility, as well as her ability to establish bridges between critical thinking, contemporary creation and cultural management.
The municipal commission has had the advice of a committee of experts made up of the president of the Promotion of Arts and Design, Salvi Plaja; the general director of Innovation and Digital Culture of the Generalitat, Marisol López; and the manager of the Barcelona Institute of Culture, Oriol Martí Sambola.
With this relief, the museum begins a phase that is decisive for consolidating itself as a reference space in the field of contemporary design and material culture, and for deepening its role as a platform for reflection, research and international projection.
