The Board of Trustees of the Fundació Museu Picasso de Barcelona has unanimously confirmed the appointment of Rosario Peiró Carrasco (Barcelona, 1968) as the new director of the institution, who will take up the position this May 2026, taking over from Xavier Guigon. The selection, the result of a public process initiated last June, places at the head of the museum a manager with a consolidated career in the management of collections and high-impact cultural projects.

Since 2008, Peiró has led the Collections Department of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, where he has promoted outstanding initiatives such as Repensar Guernica , an innovative and internationally recognized digital project that has set new standards in the research and dissemination of heritage. His career is also characterized by having forged collaborations with top-level institutions such as MOMA in New York, the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the Centre Pompidou, the Beyeler Foundation or the Picasso Museum in Malaga.

Before his time in Madrid, Peiró had already developed his career in the Catalan cultural fabric, collaborating with the Fundació Antoni Tàpies (currently the Tàpies Museum) and the Cultural Center of the “la Caixa” Foundation, and carrying out management tasks at the MACBA.

  • In 2015, Cristina Gálvez Guzzy, Cándida Fernández, Rosario Peiró, Ramiro Martínez and Ludwig Johannsen presented the details of the exhibition The Return of the Serpent. Mathias Goeritz and the Invention of Emotional Architecture, at the Iturbide Palace, located in the Historic Center of Mexico City.

The Evaluation Committee has stressed that the directorial project presented by Peiró places Barcelona and its cultural environment as the central axis of the new stage of the Picasso Museum. The future director proposes to consolidate the museum as a space of connection with the community and the local cultural fabric, as well as an accessible resource committed to the city.

In addition, Peiró wants to strengthen Barcelona as an international center for Picasso studies, increasing the museum's projection in the field of research and consolidating it as a global reference for understanding Picasso's work and his relationship with the city.

Peiró takes over from Guigon

Rosario Peiró will replace Emmanuel Guigon, who had held the position since 2016, to whom the Picasso Museum Foundation has expressed its "deep gratitude for his dedication and decisive contributions to the development of the institution." According to the Foundation, under Guigon's leadership, the museum has strengthened its international projection, increased its local audience, consolidated a high-level exhibition program and deepened its scientific rigor and research, positioning the Picasso Museum as a cultural reference in Barcelona, Catalonia and internationally.

The Evaluation Committee, chaired by the second vice-president of the Board of Trustees of the Picasso Museum Foundation of Barcelona, Genís Roca, was formed by the trustees Elisenda Rius Bergua, Oriol Martí Sambola, Llucià Homs i Capdevila, Santiago de Torres Sanahuja and Xavier Vilató Ruiz, as well as the experts Miguel Zugaza Miranda and Jean Louis Andral.
