Until March 22nd there is the opportunity to immerse yourself and create a dialogue in the creative universe of Artur Carbonell through the exhibition Més enllà de la màscara , which can be visited in the Sala Vaixells of the Palau Maricel and the Museu Maricel in Sitges. It is the most ambitious retrospective ever dedicated to this Sitges artist, which exhaustively covers all the facets of his artistic career.

The exhibition allows us to discover Carbonell not only as a painter, but also as a theatre director and set designer, reflecting his multifaceted contribution to the world of local and national culture. With a careful selection of works, documents and scenographic materials, the exhibition offers a complete look at the life and work of a creator who profoundly marked the cultural life of Sitges and beyond.

  • Artur Carbonell, 'Murdered Landscape' (1935).

The exhibition, organized by the Sitges Heritage Consortium, offers a fascinating journey through Artur Carbonell's two great passions: painting and theater. Through a dialogue between plastic works, sets, posters and personal documents, visitors can discover a creator who lived "beyond the mask", always in constant transformation and faithful to an ideal of beauty and freedom.

The project brings together more than 170 pieces from 18 institutions and more than 30 private collections, including outstanding works from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. This is, without a doubt, the most ambitious retrospective ever dedicated to Carbonell, an artist present in the main museums of the country, but still little known to the general public. Despite this, he was one of the greatest exponents of magical realism and Catalan surrealism, as well as a pioneer of avant-garde theater in the State.

  • Artur Carbonell, 'Two figures' (1931).

The exhibition also presents previously unpublished drawings and oils, specially restored for the occasion and from family collections. Carbonell's work is not alone: it is shown in dialogue with artists from his creative environment, such as Joaquim Sunyer, Joan Miró, Federico García Lorca, Alfred Sisquella, Jaume Sans, Pere Jou and his friend Pere Armengou, reflecting the evolution towards surrealism and his capacity to transform everyday life into a unique visual poetry.
