The future Banyoles Art Center – Gimferrer Collection will not open its doors at the end of this year, as planned, but rather postpones the inauguration by three months to be able to calmly complete its museography and integrate new works into the exhibition story.
The municipal plenary session last Monday approved an addendum to the agreement of the bequest of the artistic legacy of Jordi Gimferrer, which until now included 131 pieces and which is now expanded to 136. Five more works are added to a collection that aims to explain art as a continuous thread between eras, perspectives and sensibilities. Among these new additions are La Carta by Ramon Calsina, Cabilenc mort by Marià Fortuny, La palanca del Club by Gimferrer himself, the Self-portrait by Lluís Güell from Banyol and the Portrait of a Girl by Ismael Smith.
The mayor of Banyoles, Miquel Noguer, explained that this extension will allow the new museography to be carefully installed, a key process for the center to be born with the exhibition quality it deserves. The goal is for the final opening to take place in the spring, at which time the new facility will contribute to consolidating a true cultural hub in the Wall area, in dialogue with the Monastery, the Archaeological Museum and the future Library.
Meanwhile, the adaptation works of the Cal Moliner and Can Tomàs Teixidor buildings are progressing at a good pace. The civil works are practically complete, and the next step will be the museumisation of the rooms, currently in the tendering process and with an award expected in the coming weeks. The transfer and placement of the works, delicate and complex, will be the last gesture before opening the doors to the public.
With a budget of 67,000 euros, the museum will provide the center with 307 square meters of exhibition space, spread between the two historic buildings. The 136 pieces will be distributed in five thematic areas, united by a common thread that wants to invite the visitor to a leisurely and sensitive reading of art, beyond time and styles.
Banyoles thus adds a brief wait, but also a richer promise: that of an art center that is born complete, coherent and open to the cultural dialogue of the territory.
