Figurations between wars: a journey through Catalan art (1914-1945) at Sala Parés

A journey through the eclecticism and plurality of Catalan figuration between the wars, where tradition and modernity, experimentation and creative diversity meet in a constant dialogue with the social and cultural changes of the time.

Josep Llorens Artigas (1892-1980). Figura, 1924.
Figurations between wars: a journey through Catalan art (1914-1945) at Sala Parés

The journey through Catalan artistic production between 1914 and 1945, as proposed by the exhibition Figurations between Wars in the Sala Parés, offers the public the opportunity to immerse themselves in the richness and diversity of Catalan figuration of that period. This stage, marked by profound social, political and cultural changes, shows a plurality of languages and styles that reflect the constant search for new forms of expression and the will of artists to challenge and expand the limits of representation.

  • Joaquín Torres-García (1874-1949). Entoldado, 1917.

Catalan figuration of these years is, in many cases, heterogeneous and full of variants, with tensions with established conventions, thus offering a complex and stimulating vision of the artistic panorama of the period. The exhibition allows us to establish a direct dialogue with this diversity and understand how Catalan creators explored, transformed and reinvented figuration within the historical context that surrounded them.

With a hundred works that make up this new temporary exhibition, curated by Sergio Fuentes Milà and which can be visited from December 4 to February 7, 2026, the complexity of much of the painting and sculpture of the period is highlighted. The works reflect a rich, multifaceted and effervescent creative context, a moment in which the great "flag" of figuration - or, better said, of figurations - was consolidated and woven, which the gallery on Petritxol Street would maintain as a reference in the following decades.

  • Rafael Barradas (1890-1929). Portrait of Joan Salvat-Papasseit, 1918.

The exhibition includes outstanding works from key moments by artists of great relevance such as Josep de Togores, Olga Sacharoff, Manolo Hugué, Joaquín Torres-García, Juan Gris, Óscar Domínguez, Juli González, Pere Gastó, Ramon Calsina, Ricard Canals, Joaquim Sunyer, Miquel Villà, Josep Llorens Artigas, Rafael Barradas, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Joaquim Mir and Helios Gómez. During the interwar period, Catalan art was characterized by a dynamic eclecticism: artists combined tradition and modernity, experimentation and figuration, exploring multiple currents and languages in a constant dialogue with the social and cultural changes that surrounded them, and thus establishing a stage of great vitality and innovation within the history of Catalan art.
