"Pacifiction" by Albert Serra, best film of 2022 according to the Girona critics

Last January 7 at 18:30 in the evening, the prize for the Best Film of 2022 was presented to the renowned director and filmmaker from Banyó Albert Serra for Pacifiction by the Girona film critics at the Cinema Truffaut of Girona. Another year, and already 33, the Girona critics close the year with a selection of the best films released in Girona cinemas this season. For the third time - the other two were in 1993 and 2012 - there has been a tie at the top of the list: Pacifiction has scored 55 points, the same as the Oscar winner for best international film, Drive my car, by the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

The award from the Girona Film Critics Association is the last award given to Serra for this latest film. At the beginning of last December 2022, the production already won the Louis-Delluc prize for the film of the year awarded by the French critics, ex aequo with Saint Omer, by Alice Diop.

Pacifiction is a 165-minute drama with French subtitles in Catalan made in France in 2022 and its actors are Benoit Magimel, Pahoa Mahagafanau, Marc Susini and Matahi Pambrun.

The film is set on the island of Tahiti, in French Polynesia, where the High Commissioner of the Republic, de Doller, representative of the French State, is a cold and calculating man. Both in his official receptions and in illegal establishments, he does not stop taking the pulse of a local population whose anger can be awakened at any moment. And even more so when the rumor spreads in the town that a submarine has been seen, whose ghostly presence could herald a resumption of French nuclear tests.

It should be remembered that the film was already premiered at the last Cannes festival (without receiving any prize) and was shown for the first time in a special session in room 1 of Cinema Truffaut as part of the film program of the Temporada Alta 2022 Festival.
