Bea Espejo will be the new artistic director of La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona, after the project she presented to the public call of the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB) was selected for the position. The art critic and journalist, who until now was in charge of the artistic information of El País , will assume the direction of the space on La Rambla dedicated to exploring the aesthetic, political and ideological dimensions of images, as well as the coordination of the ICUB art centers.
Espejo replaces Valentí Roma, who directed La Virreina between 2016 and 2026 and who recently took over the direction of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). The evaluation committee highlighted the comprehensive nature of the new director's proposal, the solidity of her career and her ability to combine critical thinking, sensitivity to the current context and communication and relationship skills. The project aims to strengthen the role of La Virreina and deepen its connection with the citizens and the Barcelona cultural ecosystem.
Born in Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1977, Bea Espejo has a degree in Art History and a master's degree in Art Criticism and Communication. Her career has included cultural management, curating, criticism and teaching, with a continuous presence in the contemporary art scene since 2002. Between that year and 2007, she directed the exhibition program of the Estrany-de la Mota gallery, a period that allowed her to get to know the work of artists, the dynamics of the market and the mechanisms of operation of the art system.
She later developed a journalistic career in various specialized and general media. She worked as an editor and art critic for the Cultura/s supplement of La Vanguardia , took over the art section of the El Cultural supplement of El Mundo and, since 2017, has been responsible for the art information of the Babelia cultural supplement of El País . Her writing, characterized by a direct and accessible style, has contributed to bringing contemporary art closer to readers beyond strictly specialized circles. In 2017 she received the GAC Art Criticism Award, awarded within the framework of the Galeries d'Art de Catalunya awards.
