Isaac De Reza explores the physical limits of sculpture
bonart mexico city - 07/10/26

From September 3 to October 17, 2026, Lodos, in Mexico City, presents Leaner Mind , an exhibition by Isaac De Reza in which sculpture begins with an essentially physical operation: arranging, joining, flexing, and balancing steel until a configuration determined by the material's own properties is achieved. The construction process thus incorporates a performative dimension in which weight, resistance, balance, and position directly influence the definition of each piece.

De Reza works with restraint. His sculptures deliberately refrain from offering too many clues to the viewer, placing their physical presence at the center of the experience. The forms appear reduced to their essential elements, without recognizable figures or an accompanying narrative. Rather than the need to interpret or decipher, the exhibition proposes pausing before the object, attending to its weight, its surface, and the relationship its different parts establish with the space that contains them.

This formal economy does not, however, imply an absence of complexity. On the contrary, the apparent simplicity of the constructions opens up a field of relationships between matter, gravity, balance, and architecture. The sculptures modify the perception of the space and, at the same time, compel the viewer to become aware of their own physical presence. The work does not merely occupy a space, but rather conditions the way in which it is traversed and experienced.

Leaner Mind transforms limitation into a method. Instead of accumulating information, De Reza refines it, leaving only what is essential for the work to exist: matter, structure, tension, and space. The result is sculptures that appear direct and elemental, but whose relationship to weight and balance introduces a deeper perceptual dimension.
