Jordi Clos, honorary academician of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi
The appointment recognizes his career as a patron and his contribution to the preservation, dissemination and projection of the cultural heritage of Barcelona and Catalonia.
The Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi has incorporated Jordi Clos as an honorary academician, in recognition of a career closely linked to the promotion of culture, artistic patronage and the preservation and dissemination of historical heritage. President of the Barcelona Hotels Guild, Clos has developed over the past few decades an activity that has gone beyond the business sphere to place culture, heritage and knowledge as central elements of his action.
The appointment was formalized this Wednesday, September 16th in the Hall of the Casa Llotja de Mar, the institution's historic headquarters, in an event in which Clos expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to continue working in defense of culture and historical heritage. In his words, these areas must continue to act as engines of knowledge, social cohesion and international projection of Barcelona and Catalonia.
Among the merits that the Academy has taken into account, his contribution to the conservation and dissemination of archaeological heritage stands out in particular. In 1993, Jordi Clos created the Clos Archaeological Foundation and the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, initiatives that have contributed to bringing archaeology and the culture of ancient Egypt closer to a wide audience and consolidating Barcelona as a reference space for the dissemination of this heritage.
His activity as a patron has also been one of the reasons for the appointment. Throughout his career, he has promoted research projects, exhibitions, educational activities and various initiatives aimed at the dissemination of knowledge, understanding patronage as a tool capable of generating new opportunities for research and cultural transmission.
This link between heritage, culture and the city is also part of his conception of Barcelona. Clos has continuously defended the role of the Catalan capital as an international cultural reference, establishing a relationship between economic development, tourist activity and social progress and the need to preserve and value heritage. A view that considers culture not as a complementary element, but as an essential infrastructure for the development of a city.
His speech at the appointment ceremony insisted precisely on this idea. Clos received the incorporation into the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi as a distinction but also as a renewed responsibility. The institutional recognition is thus projected into the future and reinforces the commitment to a conception of culture linked to knowledge, the preservation of memory and the capacity of Barcelona and Catalonia to project itself internationally.
