Lima broadens its perspective on Latin American art
The Lima Art Museum (MALI) presents a selection of ten works donated by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, a donation that strengthens the institution's collection and broadens its approach to the diverse geographies, histories, and debates within Latin American art. This collection is part of an international initiative by the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection (CPPC), announced in 2018, which has added more than two hundred works to six leading museums in Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
The initiative reflects Patricia Phelps de Cisneros's ongoing commitment to strengthening the region's artistic institutions and promoting Latin American art internationally. In the case of MALI, the selection was made jointly by the museum and the CPPC with the aim of reinforcing specific areas of its contemporary collection and, at the same time, expanding its territorial representation.

Among the new additions are works by Peruvian artists with distinguished international careers, such as Elena Damiani and David Zink Yi. The donation also allows for an increased presence of artists from countries in the region that have been less represented in the collection until now, especially Ecuador and Panama. In this way, MALI continues to expand a collection that, starting from a solid foundation in the Andean region, has progressively broadened its scope to include pan-Andean and pan-Amazonian perspectives and other experiences within contemporary Latin American art.
The donation also exceptionally includes a work by José Gil de Castro, a key figure in South American painting of the early 19th century. Its presence bridges the gap between the contemporary core of the donation and the MALI's historical holdings, which already include a significant representation of the artist's work. The piece thus represents a major addition to the institution's historical collection.

Beyond the individual importance of the works, the donation allows for a deeper understanding of the museum as a space capable of forging new connections between territories and historical periods. The pieces contribute to shifting the focus toward a more diverse cartography of the continent, incorporating voices and origins that enrich the interpretation of the multiple realities that shape Latin American art.
This new collaboration is part of a long-standing relationship between Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the CPPC, and the Lima Art Museum (MALI). One of its most notable precedents was in 2004, when MALI hosted "Dialogues: Latin American Art from the Cisneros Collection ," an exhibition that brought together works from the collection with the aim of establishing relationships, contrasts, and affinities among different artistic experiences in Latin America.
