Joan Crous returns to Banyoles with L'Ombra, a work turned into a book
The presentation of the publication at the Monastery of Sant Esteve will bring together the artist, Ricard Planas and Fernando Castro Flórez in a dialogue with Natàlia Chocarro about one of his most ambitious installations.
Joan Crous, an artist and craftsman from Banyoles who has been based in Bologna since the nineties, returned to his city of origin this summer with L'Ombra. La città degli uomini , a monumental installation conceived to dialogue with one of the most significant spaces in Banyoles: the church of the Monastery of Sant Esteve.
For more than five years, Crous has worked on a proposal that finds in monastic architecture the ideal context to unfold a universe built from fragments, light, ash, glass and sediments. The work, one of his most ambitious creations to date, establishes a close relationship with the space that hosts it and poses a reflection on memory, fragility and the traces left by destruction. The stones, vaults and light of the old monastery thus cease to be a simple backdrop to become an active part of an installation that speaks of time and everything that it preserves or erases.
Now, this exhibition experience extends beyond the physical space of the Monastery with the publication of L'Ombra , a book that collects and expands the resonances generated by the project. The publication brings together perspectives and reflections on Crous's work and allows us to delve deeper into a creative universe in which matter, memory and architecture maintain a constant dialogue.
Next Tuesday, September 8, at 7 p.m., the Lluís Coromina Isern Foundation and Banyoles City Council will present the book in the cloister of the Monastery of Sant Esteve. The event will feature the participation of Joan Crous, Ricard Planas, cultural manager and editor of Bonart , and Fernando Castro Flórez, art critic and exhibition curator, in a conversation moderated by cultural manager Natàlia Chocarro.
The presentation will thus propose a new approach to L'Ombra , after its passage through the Monastery, and will allow the work to be placed within Crous's trajectory and in relation to the issues that cross his artistic practice. The book functions, in this sense, as an extension of the installation: if the work occupied a space and transformed it, the publication preserves its ideas, words and views.
The evening will continue, once the presentation is over, at the Espai Eat Art in Banyoles, where refreshments will be served on the occasion of the inauguration of the exhibition currently installed in this space, Brossa portátil. La maleta museu . In this way, Crous's return to Banyoles unfolds in different spaces of the city and establishes a journey between contemporary creation, heritage, memory and critical reflection.
