Josep Fernández Gelmà, winner of the 70th International Rapid Painting Award of Tossa de Mar
Last Sunday, August 30, the traditional international Tossa de Mar Rapid Painting competition was held in the Sala Trinquet of the La Nau building.
The winner chosen for this 70th edition was Josep Fernández Gelmà from Tossa de Mar, for the Tossa de Mar City Council Award, the main award of the competition, endowed with a total of 2,500 euros.
During the course of Sunday, artists from all over occupied the different spaces of the municipality to create their works in situ . The streets, beaches, coves and landscapes of Tossa became, once again, a large open-air art workshop, where participants were able to capture the colors, light and essence of the town.
Recognized as the Dean's Award of Catalonia and Spain, the competition has reached a particularly significant edition this year, number 70, consolidated as a meeting point between artists with a recognized career and new promises in the visual arts.
The participants were given a single day to create their works, with a theme of their own choosing but necessarily inspired by the coastal town of Tossa de Mar.
Regarding the list of awardees, they were as follows: Tossa de Mar City Council Award, endowed with 2,500 euros: Josep Fernández Gelmà; Girona Provincial Council Award, endowed with 2,000 euros: Juanjo Valeros Mena; Tossa City Council Watercolor Award, endowed with 800 euros: Ramon Pujolà Font; Girona Provincial Council Watercolor Award, endowed with 500 euros: Òscar Sanchis Palomino; Tossa City Council Oil/Acrylic Award, endowed with 800 euros: Joan Pons Duran; Girona Provincial Council Oil/Acrylic Award, endowed with 500 euros: Joan Coch Rey; Tossa City Council Other Procedures Award, endowed with 500 euros: Allan Vaughan.
In the youth category, the winners were: 13 to 15 years old: Lara Ortega, and 16 to 18 years old: Angela Bastkowski Barnils. While in the children's category, the awards were for: 4 to 6 years old: Sara Font; 7 to 9 years old: Marina Font, and 10 to 12 years old: Zoe Berger Casademont. In the youth and children's categories, the winners received lots of artistic products.
The novelty of this 70th edition is that the "Special Bonart Prize" has also been awarded, which consists of a free annual subscription to the winner of this competition and which was awarded by Alexandra Planas to Abel Florido.
A jury linked to the world of art and culture
As for the members of the jury for this 70th edition, it was made up of Sergi Barnils Basomba, born in Equatorial Guinea. He is a visual artist with a consolidated artistic career abroad, especially in Italy and Germany. He is a member of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi; Beth Barnils Vidal, with a Degree in Visual Arts from the Massana School and a Degree in Fashion Styling from the Felicidad Duce School in Barcelona; Eva Ramos Subirats, visual artist, illustrator and muralist; Mario Zucchitelo Gilioli, Gold Medal of the Town of Tossa, historian and philologist, and Alexandra Planas Camps, director of marketing, advertising and communication and cultural manager of the Bonart Magazine.
The works can be visited until September 5th.
According to sources from the council, all the works presented will be exhibited in the Sala Trinquet of the La Nau building until September 5, 2026. This exhibition can be visited from Monday to Saturday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On the other hand, the works awarded in this edition of the competition will become part of the municipal artistic heritage of Tossa de Mar.
