Canals Galeria d'Art inaugurates the new season with Maria Girona and the Tapestry , an exhibition that focuses on a particularly significant facet of the artist's career and, at the same time, recovers a fundamental episode in the renewal of tapestry in Catalonia. The exhibition, which can be visited until November, coincides with the gallery's 53 years of history and delves into Girona's relationship with the Catalan Tapestry School of Sant Cugat.
Maria Girona was one of the most prominent artists of Catalan art in the 20th century and also the second woman to participate in the Catalan Tapestry School, located in the premises of the Old Aymat House in Sant Cugat. Her incorporation into this project meant the creation of a tapestry and participation in a profound renewal of the approaches of this discipline, which left behind its strictly artisanal conception to place itself in the field of contemporary artistic creation.
One of the main points of the exhibition is the recovery of Oval rosat , a tapestry made in June 1967, which constitutes one of the most relevant testimonies of Girona's participation in this process of transformation. The work demonstrates his personal approach to the language of tapestry and his desire to explore the expressive possibilities of a discipline that, during those years, was undergoing a profound renewal.
The Catalan Tapestry School brought together some of the country's most important creators around a new way of understanding this practice. The artists who participated questioned the limits between art and craftsmanship and contributed to turning the tapestry into a space for plastic experimentation. In this context, Maria Girona brought her own, sensitive and innovative perspective, integrated into the new languages that were transforming Catalan art.
Girona's relationship with the main promoters of the Catalan Tapestry School and its participation in this project are part of a still little-known episode in the history of Catalan art. The Canals Galeria d'Art exhibition contributes to recovering it and putting it back into circulation, vindicating the value of a movement that placed the tapestry in a new creative territory.
At the same time, Maria Girona and the Tapestry highlights the role of women artists in this transformation. Her participation in the Catalan Tapestry School allows us to broaden our perspective on a period in which several female creators contributed decisively to renewing the country's artistic practices, often from a less visible position within traditional narratives of art history.
