División del Norte brings contemporary muralism to the museum space of Casa Chihuahua

Casa Chihuahua opens its doors to Alma , an exhibition by the División del Norte collective that brings together the work of artists Daniel Montes Aragonés and Antonio León García and explores the dialogue between contemporary muralism and the cultural identity of Chihuahua. The exhibition is part of the Open Doors Thursdays program and will be on display until September 21, 2026.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into a career marked by intervention in public spaces. Montes, originally from Parral, and León, from Madera, have dedicated years to muralism, creating over a hundred works throughout the country. Around 30 of these murals are currently located in the city of Chihuahua, where they have become part of the everyday landscape, bringing art to streets, neighborhoods, and community spaces.

Alma is structured around two core sections that allow visitors to explore the collective's main lines of research. The first places Rarámuri identity at the heart of the exhibition, understood as an essential cultural and symbolic reference point for understanding the territory and its communities. The second focuses on the trajectory of División del Norte and the evolution of an artistic project that has transformed murals into a tool for expression, memory, and collective construction.

Moving these works from the urban space to the museum galleries does not eliminate their social dimension. On the contrary, the museum context offers the opportunity to pause and delve deeper into the processes behind each intervention, as well as the discourses and community experiences that permeate the artists' production.

The exhibition thus champions muralism as a living practice, capable of forging links between contemporary creation, public space, and identity. In the case of División del Norte, this relationship manifests itself in a body of work that draws from the territory of Chihuahua and the cultures that inhabit it to construct images intended both to transform the environment and to generate spaces for recognition and reflection.
