Catalan circus takes Berlin with a special focus at the Berlin Circus Festival
Four Catalan companies will present their shows at the main contemporary circus festival in Germany with the support of the Institut Ramon Llull.
Catalan circus will be the protagonist of the Berlin Circus Festival, one of the most prominent contemporary circus events in Germany, which from August 5 to 16 will host a focus dedicated to Catalan creation with the participation of the companies Fèmut, Eunoia Kolektiva, Totapedra and Manel Rosés.
The initiative, promoted with the support of the Institut Ramon Llull, includes both the presentation of shows and professional conferences with project presentations, meeting spaces and round tables between artists and professionals in the sector. The program is part of MERIDIAN(s), a line of the Circus Boost Plan of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya which aims to strengthen the links between Catalonia and Germany through programming, artistic residencies and professional exchanges.
The Girona company Fèmut will be in charge of starting this Catalan tour of the festival with Clam , a proposal that can be seen from August 9 to 11. The show, created and performed by Raimon Mató, Júlia Clarà Badosa and Àfrica Llorens, combines acrobatics in pairs, pole vaulting, dance and music by Anna Ferrer to build an ode to the simple life, freedom and the beauty of sharing.
Between August 11 and 13, it will be the turn of Eunoia Kolektiva, formed by eight long-time acrobats grouped into four duos: Blanca&Guim, Guille&Amer, Dúo Nep and Du'K'to. The company will present Tenet , a fresh and dynamic show that explores the limits of balance through a highly precise acrobatic language.
The most personal circus will come from Barcelona's Manel Rosés, who from August 14 to 16 will present Ákri , a solo that fuses acrobatics, object manipulation, theater and clowning. The piece reflects, from a humorous and philosophical perspective, on the profession of the circus artist and his relationship with the stage.
The Catalan program will be completed with Totapedra, which on August 15th and 16th will present Pifia , a creation by Andreu Casadellà —clown, acrobat and trapeze artist— and Júlia Clarà, physical theatre specialist and director. Designed for all audiences, the show combines acrobatics, stage play and humour in a family-friendly proposal.
All performances will take place in various spaces of the Tempelhofer Feld, one of the large open spaces in Berlin, with a history linked first to military use and later to airport activity. The Catalan presence at the Berlin Circus Festival thus consolidates the international projection of the country's contemporary circus and reinforces the creative connections between Catalonia and Germany.
The MERIDIAN(s) program is coordinated by the Association of Circus Professionals of Catalonia (APCC) and has the support of the Institut Ramon Llull and the Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies (ICEC) of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
