Matadero Madrid opens its season with digital creation, dance and contemporary art
Matadero Madrid is preparing a new season packed with offerings related to contemporary creation, audiovisual experimentation, and the performing arts. The Madrid venue will kick off its program with a lineup that brings together some of the most prominent names in current creative work, from the LEV Matadero electronic and digital culture festival to Carlos Aires' site-specific installation and the series dedicated to choreographer Damien Jalet.
From September 17 to 20, the eighth edition of LEV Matadero will once again transform the venue into a meeting point for sound, audiovisual, and digital innovation. The festival will bring together projects that explore the boundaries between technology, image, and music, solidifying its position as a leading event for new forms of contemporary creation.
One of the season's major projects will arrive at Nave 0 with "Dance, Dance, You Damned ," an installation created by artist Carlos Aires (Ronda, 1974) as part of the Abierto x Obras series. The exhibition, which will be open from September 11 to January 24, presents an immersive intervention in the former cold storage chamber of the municipal slaughterhouse, a space marked by the traces of an old fire and by a memory associated with destruction and resistance.
Aires transforms the ship into a unique dance floor suspended between ruin and celebration. More than one hundred metal struts and some twenty screens construct a scenic landscape where enigmatic characters, immersive sounds, and an atmosphere that blends darkness, euphoria, and unease coexist. Visitors thus enter a forest of structures that reflects on the fragility of spaces and the capacity of art to activate new experiences.
Contemporary dance will also play a leading role with a series dedicated to Damien Jalet, one of the most internationally renowned choreographers, who has collaborated with artists such as Madonna, Marina Abramović, and Thom Yorke. Organized by Cineteca Madrid and Centro Danza Matadero, the program will run from September 5 to 12 and will include screenings of some of his audiovisual works, as well as an introduction to the career of a creator who has redefined the links between body, movement, and image.
Literature and independent publishing will have their place at the new edition of Back to the Book, which will take place from September 11 to 13 at Matadero Madrid and Casa del Lector. The festival will feature figures such as Julieta Venegas, who will present her first novel, Norteña , as well as illustrator and author Paco Roca and writer Lucía Solla Sobral.
The autumn program continues with Animario, Madrid's International Festival of Contemporary Animation, which will celebrate its ninth edition from December 10 to 13 at Cineteca Madrid. The event will once again bring together new perspectives on animation and its relationship with film, visual arts, and digital media.
Within the field of research and collective creation, the Medialab program will promote the collaborative laboratory LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth, a space intended to explore new methodologies of production and shared thinking around digital culture and technology.
New creative processes from the Center for artistic residencies
The Matadero Arts Residency Centre will continue to be a driving force behind contemporary creation in Madrid. From Nave 16, it will continue to host projects related to the environment, visual arts, education, experimental electronic music, and sound production, and will now include residencies for film projects in development.
Through the CRA Produce program, the center will feature the participation of artist María Jerez, who will conduct research on motherhood, caregiving, and artistic production. Starting in October, various creative processes will be opened to the public through the program "En boca de artista" (In the Artist's Mouth ), a series of conversations where residents will share their research and reflections.
The season will culminate with the open house at the Center for Artistic Residencies, scheduled for November 21, an opportunity to get a close look at the work of the creators who develop their projects at Matadero.
