The New Museum in New York has announced the appointment of Massimiliano Gioni as its new director, concluding a ten-month selection process. Gioni will succeed Lisa Phillips, who announced her retirement last fall after 26 years at the helm of the museum and after becoming only the second woman to serve as its director.

Associated with the New Museum for two decades and artistic director for the last twelve years, Gioni has played a decisive role in consolidating the center's international profile. Among his main contributions is the creation of the New Museum Triennial, inaugurated in 2009 and now a leading platform for discovering emerging artists from around the world.

Throughout her career at the institution, she has curated important solo exhibitions dedicated to figures such as Lynda Benglis, Judy Chicago, Theaster Gates, Hans Haacke, Nicole Eisenman, Faith Ringgold, Kahlil Joseph, Marta Minujín, Chris Ofili or Raymond Pettibon, in addition to promoting projects that have marked the contemporary artistic debate.

One of the most significant milestones of his career was the realization, in 2021, of the posthumous project of the influential Nigerian curator Okwui Enwezor with the collective exhibition Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America , a show focused on the mourning of the African American community and the consequences of white nationalism in the United States.

This same year, Gioni was also responsible for inaugurating the new extension of the New Museum, designed by the OMA studio, with the exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future, an ambitious collective exhibition that reflects on the future of humanity in a context of accelerated technological transformation.

His curatorial agenda will continue in the coming months with the opening, at the end of September, of the largest museum retrospective dedicated to date to the renowned video artist Arthur Jafa, an exhibition he co-directs and which will be one of the highlights of the museum's programming.
