The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is embarking on a new phase in its artistic development with the appointment of Florence Ostende as its new Director of Artistic Programs and Content, a position she secured following an international selection process. The art historian and curator joins the Museum's management team with the mission of strengthening its artistic vision and defining new strategic directions in the creation and dissemination of content.
In her new role, Ostende will oversee the Exhibitions and Conservation, Curatorial, Education, and Interpretation departments, as well as play a key role in the growth and promotion of the Museum's Collection. Her appointment to the Board of Directors reinforces the institution's commitment to a contemporary and global perspective, capable of connecting artistic excellence with the demands and sensibilities of today's audiences.
With extensive experience in modern and contemporary art, Florence Ostende has worked at some of Europe's most prestigious cultural institutions. From 2024 to 2026, she headed the Artistic Department at Mudam – Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg. Prior to that, she spent eight years as a curator at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, where she achieved international acclaim for exhibitions focused on global modernism, contemporary art, architecture, performance, and cultural history.
Following the announcement of her appointment, Ostende expressed her satisfaction at joining the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao at a time she considers crucial for cultural institutions. “It is an honor to join the Museum at a time of profound transformation for museums and the communities they serve.
