The Institut del Teatre is hosting, from May 27, the exhibition Modest Cuixart and the Performing Arts , a proposal that focuses on the performing dimension of one of the essential names in contemporary Catalan art. Promoted by the Museu de les Arts Escèniques (MAE) in collaboration with the Cuixart Foundation, the exhibition is part of the commemorative events for the centenary of the artist's birth and is curated by the doctor in Art History Raquel Medina, with the collaboration of Marc Cuixart.

The exhibition, installed in the lobby of the Institut del Teatre, offers a visual and documentary journey through Modest Cuixart's intense connection with the world of the stage. A painter and set designer, Cuixart developed an artistic career marked by experimentation and constant dialogue with disciplines such as theater, dance and music, a lesser-known facet but essential to understanding his work.

Born in Barcelona in 1925 and died in Palafrugell in 2007, Modest Cuixart was one of the key figures of the post-war Catalan avant-garde. International recognition would come to him especially with the Grand Prize of the São Paulo Biennial in 1959, consolidating him as one of the Catalan artists with the most international projection of the 20th century.

The exhibition brings together around twenty panels with photographs, figurines, sketches and posters that demonstrate the creative force with which the artist conceived the scenic space and its close relationship with theatrical languages. Beyond painting, the exhibition vindicates Cuixart's role as a transversal creator, capable of transferring his plastic universe to the stage.

Coinciding with the inauguration, on May 27 at 6:30 p.m., the Auditorium of the Institut del Teatre will host a round table dedicated to delving deeper into this artistic aspect. The participants will be curator Raquel Medina; Marc Cuixart, architect and son of the artist; Enric Ciurans, director of the Department of Art History at the University of Barcelona and specialist in theater; and Vicenç Altaió, poet, essayist and director of the Brossa Foundation.

The exhibition can be visited for free until the fall of 2026. Opening hours will be Monday to Friday from 9 am to 8 pm, while on weekends it will be possible to access it coinciding with the performance and box office hours of the Teatre Ovidi Montllor and the Teatre Estudi.
