The Chillida Leku museum is entering a new phase with the appointment of Mikel Chillida as its director, a position he officially assumed on April 1st. Having been associated with the institution for seven years as head of development, the grandson of sculptor Eduardo Chillida is now taking the lead in shaping the future of this iconic museum in Hernani.

The change comes after Mireia Massagué's tenure, who directed the museum since its reopening in 2019, a joint venture with the Swiss gallery Hauser & Wirth, which manages it. Massagué will remain involved with the project, though going forward she will serve in an advisory capacity, thus ensuring the institution's strategic continuity.

For Mikel Chillida, assuming the directorship is “a true privilege,” not only because of the museum’s cultural significance, but also because of the deep personal connection it represents. “My commitment is to continue the artist’s vision,” he stated, emphasizing that Chillida Leku’s mission remains steadfast: to conserve, research, and disseminate the sculptor’s work, while strengthening its connection to the present.

This new phase aims to consolidate the museum as a dynamic space, capable of expanding its audiences without losing the essence of Chillida's legacy. Under the direction of his grandson, the institution faces the challenge of continuing its dialogue with contemporary art while preserving one of the most influential sculptural legacies of the 20th century.
