Alfredo Jaar transforms art into global reflection

The exhibition You and Me and the Others at the Tokyo Opera Art City Gallery presents a selection ranging from large-scale works created for the Hiroshima exhibition, to emblematic pieces from Alfredo Jaar's early work in the 1970s, as well as a new work conceived specifically for this occasion.

Throughout his career, Jaar has maintained a consistent commitment to global themes. His work invites us to reflect on issues such as war, inequality, and everyday challenges, without resorting to condemnation. Rather, he creates what he calls “poetic models” for understanding the world, encouraging viewers to observe, question, and reconsider reality from personal perspectives. In this sense, his works not only confront us with the complexity of good and evil but also remind us that we can all be connected to tragedies, even in distant places.

Encountering these pieces evokes a mixture of emotions and thoughts: it sensitizes us, confronts us, and, at the same time, offers us the opportunity to recognize the power of art to generate awareness and empathy. Jaar invites us to look closely, to reflect, and, despite our differences, to find paths to happiness and mutual understanding.

Jaar's critical and poetic approach has been widely recognized in the art world. In 2018, he became the eleventh recipient of the Hiroshima Art Prize, an award that honors artists who contribute to human peace through art. In 2023, the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art held a memorial exhibition in his honor, solidifying his legacy as an artist who challenges us and makes us reflect on the world we share.
