Daemmrich's Mediterranean
bonart castell d'aro - 28/03/26

Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro and S'Agaró have begun their annual visual arts program with the retrospective exhibition "My Mediterranean", by the German-born artist Elke Daemmrich. This exhibition, organized by the Department of Culture, is the first of seven proposals that make up this year's exhibition calendar, which is now in its 44th consecutive edition.

The exhibition is installed at Benedormiens Castle and can be visited from February 21 to April 12, 2026.

Born in Dresden, Daemmrich has an extensive international career. Between 1989 and 1994 she was part of the artist group El cavaller blau in Leipzig. Since 1993 she has lived and worked in France, first in Lacoste (Vaucluse) with a grant from the Kulturfonds Berlin and later in Occitania.

His CV includes more than 110 solo exhibitions and 180 group exhibitions worldwide. He is a member of the Taylor Foundation, the International Association of Artists of Paris, the Monegasque National Committee for UNESCO and the GEDOK Mitteldeutschland in Germany. Among his notable projects is the engraving and painting work on Francisco de Goya, commissioned by the Goya Museum in Castres between 1997 and 1999.

The retrospective brings together around fifty works. At the same time, a selection of pieces from the Municipal Art Collection is exhibited on the upper floor of the castle, with works by artists who have exhibited in the municipality over the last four decades.

According to art historian and critic Víctor López Moya, Daemmrich's work uses color as a vehicle to convey human experiences and complex social realities. He defines his style as a "magical realism" that combines Mediterranean lyricism with the denunciation of themes linked to human dignity. His painting offers a personal vision of landscapes and the human essence, based on contemporary references despite his self-taught training.

With this inauguration, the municipality consolidates an exhibition cycle that extends across three spaces. After the exhibition closes in April, Benedormiens Castle will host the collective exhibition Jov'Art (from April 17 to May 10) and, subsequently, a painting exhibition by Duvan, scheduled to begin on May 23.
