Elena Asins: between machine and art

Elena Asins: between machine and art
bonart donosti - 27/03/26

Kutxa Fundazioa Kubo is hosting the exhibition Structure, Space, Time until May 24th, which offers a journey through the work of Elena Asins (Madrid, 1940 - Azpirotz, 2015) based on three fundamental notions that construct and define her artistic thinking. These three vectors, as well as the constant dialogue she establishes between theory and practice, form the backbone of her artistic project.

The exhibition aligns with Kutxa Fundazioa's objective of showcasing artists connected to the Basque Country, as well as offering a fresh perspective on established artists. Curated by Juan Pablo Huercanos and organized in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, it brings together more than 100 works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, books, audiovisual pieces, and installations. These span from her beginnings in 1968, a pivotal year in her artistic career, to her latest productions from the early 21st century.

In Elena Asins's work, the traditions of the 20th-century avant-garde converge with the computer science and information theory developed in the 1960s, traversing movements such as Op Art and Minimalism. Her use of calculus and algorithms makes her a pioneer in the use of the computer as a creative tool, as well as an essential figure in computational art and modern and contemporary geometric abstraction. In 2006, she was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, and in 2011, she received the National Prize for Visual Arts. In addition to her artistic production, Elena Asins carried out significant critical and theoretical work, publishing essays, books, and poetry collections, as well as numerous articles in avant-garde journals specializing in art and aesthetics in Spain, France, Germany, and the United States.
