Vladimir Veličković: Movement and inertia
bonart malaga - 25/03/26

The exhibition Vladimir Veličković: Flight, Vertigo, and Fall , curated by Carlos Ferrer Barrera, opens at the Tabacalera Exhibition Space in Málaga, offering an introduction to the work of one of the most prominent Serbian artists of the last fifty years on the international scene. The exhibition brings together more than fifty pieces—including engravings, lithographs, and serigraphs—focused on the representation of the body in motion, a fundamental theme in the artist's work.

Vladimir Veličković (1935–2019) developed his work through series in which the figures appear to be plunging into darkness or fleeing an inevitable fate. His imagery draws on influences such as the decomposing bodies of Francis Bacon, the chronophotography of Eadweard Muybridge, and the raw expressionism of Matthias Grünewald. This exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of works that address both religious themes—orators, births, and crucifixions—and studies of the human body in motion: running, jumping, fleeing, and falling.

Initially trained in architecture in Belgrade, Veličković showed from an early age a marked interest in the visual arts, especially drawing, painting, and sculpture. After completing his studies and military service, he left his family home to dedicate himself fully to his artistic career in Zagreb. During this period, he witnessed the emergence of the Mediala group, a collective with a fantastical vision of painting that, although he never joined, influenced the dissemination of his early work.

In 1965, he achieved international recognition by representing Tito's Yugoslavia at the Paris Biennale, where he caught the attention of renowned critics. This acclaim allowed him to settle permanently in the French capital, consolidating a career marked by expressive intensity and the exploration of the body as a territory of tension and violence.
