The Dutch city of Maastricht becomes the global epicenter of art and antiques until March 19th with the celebration of TEFAF, the prestigious fair organized by The European Fine Art Foundation. With 39 editions behind it, TEFAF has established itself as one of the most influential events in the art market, offering collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts the opportunity to view and acquire museum-quality pieces from all periods.

This year, the fair brings together 278 gallery owners from 24 countries, along with international collectors making their first transactions in an atmosphere of optimism. Among them, the Spanish-speaking presence stands out: eight Spanish galleries and three Latin American galleries, the largest participation to date from this linguistic community at TEFAF.

  • Work by Diego Velázquez.

The event, which spans over 7,000 years of art history, presents an impressive repertoire ranging from Egyptian art to the latest avant-garde movements, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, armor, rare books, musical instruments, and tapestries. This year, the fair breaks records with over 670 works by women artists and designers, reinforcing its commitment to diversity and visibility in the international market.

Among the most outstanding pieces, Colnaghi presented a superb Velázquez, Portrait of Don Sebastián García de Huerta (1576-1644), secretary of the Holy Office under Philip III and Philip IV, which sold for seven million euros. Due to its protected status, it can only be acquired by a Spanish buyer or a foreigner residing in Spain, under a temporary export permit for exhibition.

  • Work by Joan Miró.

The most expensive work at the fair, according to reports, is a 1945 Miró, Woman Dreaming of Escape , offered by the Canadian gallery Landau Fine Art for 25 million euros. Visitors can also admire multimillion-euro pieces by masters such as Juan Gris, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dalí, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky, displayed in gleaming stands reminiscent of the world's most prestigious museums.
