DANA characters: The art that transforms in memory of Antonio García López
bonart valencia - 29/10/25

Just a year ago, Valencia experienced one of the most shocking meteorological episodes in its recent history: the Dana, or Isolated High-Level Depression, which transformed streets and squares into ephemeral rivers and tested the resilience of the Valencian Community. Beyond the tragedy and material damage, the Dana left a trail of human stories that reveal the capacity for solidarity, creativity and resistance of the city's inhabitants. Local artists, photographers and chroniclers found a source of inspiration in the catastrophe, documenting everything from the force of the rain to the everyday gestures of mutual aid that emerged between neighbors.

Antonio García López, an artist directly affected by DANA, combines surrealist elements in his work with a look committed to the memory of the floods in Valencia. In his latest project, he seeks to make the consequences of these catastrophes visible to prevent them from falling into oblivion. The series entitled Personatges de la DANA pays tribute to both victims and volunteers, incorporating real objects from the affected areas that, as votive offerings, take on a symbolic presence in works such as Víctimes ahir i hui , El desaparegut , Els que no es van salvar , Els atrapats , Els voluntaris , L'heroi anònim , Els prescindibles and El resilient .

This exhibition curated by Carolina Maestro Grau, which combines surrealist elements with real objects collected from the affected areas, invites visitors to reflect on memory, solidarity and resilience in the face of catastrophe. The meeting with art and memory will be open to the public from October 15 to November 16 at Ca Revolta, offering the public the opportunity to connect with an intense and meaningful visual experience.

The DANA Characters , in their materiality, are integrated as if they were an extension of the victims' skin, becoming a silent cry that denounces the lack of empathy of our leaders. Works such as Dear Parasites or What Was Missing capture the tension and indignation experienced in Paiporta with the arrival of the authorities: empty gestures, rituals of presence that did not console or protect, while the population had been left to their own devices during the previous days. The series, thus, transforms pain and injustice into a visual poetics that challenges and moves, turning the memory of DANA into a song of dignity and resistance.
