End of stage for 'Local Summer' with more than 18,500 visitors

Four years of touring and Sant Boi de Llobregat marks the end of the Estiueig de proximité exhibition with more than 18,500 visitors. The exhibition dedicated to the origins and heritage of early tourism closes its doors this Saturday, September 6, by the mayor of the municipality and president of the Barcelona Provincial Council, Lluïsa Moret, and will feature the last guided tour of the exhibition, by its curator, Joaquim Maria Puigvert.

The first stop was in July 2021 at the Arenys de Mar Museum, the traveling exhibition was awarded the Best Temporary Exhibition Award of 2021 by the Association of Museums of Catalonia (AMC), and the exhibition is a co-production of the Barcelona Provincial Council together with the Arenys de Mar and Masnou Nautical Museums. The project is inspired by the research on health and summer vacations of its curator, Joaquim Maria Puigvert, professor at the University of Girona and recognized expert in this field.

Summering in the local area, 1850-1950 has been seen in the following facilities: Arenys de Mar Museum, Montmeló Municipal Museum, Thermalia Caldes de Montbui Museum, Torre Balldovina Museum in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Masnou Municipal Nautical Museum (Espai Casinet), Calella Municipal Archive Museum (Exhibition Hall of the Old Town Hall of Calella), Palau Mercader Museum in Cornellà de Llobregat, Cerdanyola Art Museum, Tomàs Balvey Archive Museum in Cardedeu, Gavà Museum, Abelló Museum in Mollet del Vallès, Vilassar de Dalt Archive Museum, Can Tinturé of the Esplugues de Llobregat Museum, the Camp de les Lloses de Tona Interpretation Center, Sant Cugat Museum and Sant Boi de Llobregat Museum.

Through works of art and pieces from the collections of the museums of the Network of Local Museums, as well as photographic collections from the Network of Municipal Archives and other institutions, the exhibition invites you to discover the multiple social dimensions of summering and the rich heritage legacy that this phenomenon left in towns located less than fifty kilometers from Barcelona, in the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries.

  • Year 2021 at the Arenys de Mar Museum.

In its itinerant tour, the exhibition has been able to adapt to the uniqueness of each municipality. In Sant Boi, the gaze is fixed on the past as a summer refuge for the Barcelona bourgeoisie, who found there a privileged setting for leisure and social life. Among those spaces, the Sant Jordi Summer Center stands out —popularly known as the 'Casino of the Rich'—, founded in 1906. With its dances, concerts and cultural evenings, it became a true symbol of refined leisure and the worldly spirit of the petty bourgeoisie who made the town their holiday setting.
