From 30 August at 7:00 pm the Manresa Museum will inaugurate the exhibition entitled The Democratic Assembly of Catalonia: a pioneering opposition to Francoism, which can be visited until 26 October in the exhibition hall of the cloister. The exhibition has been curated by Ignasi Perramon, former member of the Democratic Assembly of Bages and has been carried out with the collaboration of the Memory and History Association of Manresa and the Culture Section of the Manresa City Council. The event is also expected to be attended by the president of the Memory and History Association of Manresa, Salvador Redó i Martí. The presentation will be given by the artist of the work, Josep Barés i Soler.
It should be remembered that the Assembly of Catalonia was the unitary anti-Franco platform where political parties, unions, associations and individuals participated with shared objectives summarized in the motto: Freedom, Amnesty and Statute of Autonomy. This exhibition sets the context and activity of the assemblies of Manresa and Bages and explains how they worked from underground, how they suffered repression, how they gathered thousands of people in the events of the Diada, how they fought to save the architectural heritage. It also shows us the struggles shared in factories, in neighborhoods, on the street, from organizations, and from feminist and environmental movements. Visitors will also be able to see posters of the time, related to the anti-Franco struggle and in favor of democracy, as well as documentation and other pieces from the museum's collection such as lithographs by Joan Miró i Ferrà and Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar.
Network Memory Project
This exhibition proposal is also part of the Memòria en Xarxa project, an initiative of the Network of Local Museums of the Barcelona Provincial Council that claims historical memory through the museums of the territory. This year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Franco, the project focuses its attention on the neighborhood, student, Catalanist, union and association movements that, during the sixties, promoted the anti-Franco struggle. Within the framework of the exhibition, several complementary activities have been programmed for all audiences such as commented visits to the exhibition, participatory workshops, educational proposals.
