Joan Casellas has created Paisatge Modern, concentration, superposition and centrifugation New York - Barcelona, 1988-1993 at Can Tarradas de Teià. The artist, originally from the town of Maresme, is one of the great action artists in both Catalonia and Spain, combining his work with performances, ephemeral interventions and conceptual photography.

This is the fifth private exhibition at Can Tarradas that opens on Saturday, August 2 with a Casellas that recalls the moment of founding of the magazine AIRE in 1992, creating a basic photographic archive for the study of national and international action art.

“The golden age of the screened photocopy, the self-published magazine and multifunctional photography. In the end I left the Hudson River behind to take refuge in Bridgehampton; there I heard a voice that led me to photograph Pollock's grave. Pollock's grave weighed so much in my camera that the next day I didn't take it with me on the trip to Manhattan and, lo and behold, the Gilbert & George tandem were resuming their famous Singing sculpture action at the Sonnanbend Gallery on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the action. I keep the program in my hand like a treasure”, writes the artist as an introduction to this Modern Landscape.

Although he lives in Escaules (Alt Empordà), he maintains a strong link with Teià: the AIRE archive and family history are housed in the family farmhouse in the village and a few months ago he donated two of his works to the Teià City Council: a replica of the sculpture Brotxa (1975) and an acrylic painting entitled Figura (1987). Each piece is valued at around €3,000 and includes QR codes that link to texts about his ancestors. This act is part of an agreement so that the works are “permanently exhibited and accessible to the public” in municipal spaces.
