The universe of David Bailey at the MOP

Penelope Tree as Mickey Mouse, 1970
The universe of David Bailey at the MOP

A total explosion at the MOP Center in A Coruña with David Bailey's Changing Fashion, on view until September 14. More than 140 photographs cover a large part of his artistic journey, with pieces from the 1960s and 1970s, stopping at iconic works, many of which are previously unseen.

The MOP Center (Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation) dazzles once again, exhibiting Box of Pin-Ups, a portfolio of portraits of 36 British figures, including Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, and Jean Shrimpton. These figures defined an era and were perfectly captured by Bailey, who is accompanied by studio objects and an exclusive short film.

  • Sue Murray, 1965.

This is the first major retrospective in Spain of the British photographer, organized by Tim Marlow and the Camera Eye studio. Bailey is a key figure in revolutionizing fashion photography, where he highlights the essence of people in contrast to the rigidity characteristic of traditional portraits of the era.

David Bailey knew how to capture the scale of photography, the moment captured, the ultimate goal. He knew how to create from actors, models, and gangsters, where Bailey managed to carve out a niche among them all and reinvent a genre that remained anonymous. He captured the spirit in an unapologetic portrait, unconcerned with class.

  • Jean Shrimpton, 1965.

He was born in 1938 in Leytonstone, north of London, just before the outbreak of World War II. He acquired his first camera far away, specifically in Singapore while serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF). From that viewfinder lens, his meteoric rise to Vogue stardom took him to the top of the magazine cover.
