Miguel Ángel Encuentra in the Castle of Benedormiens

A tribute exhibition that covers half a century of artistic career marked by the expressive force and transformative vision of Encuentra.

Miguel Ángel Encuentra in the Castle of Benedormiens

From June 14 to July 27, 2025, you can visit the retrospective of the recently deceased artist, Miguel Ángel Encuentra (Aliaga, Teruel, 1951 - Barbastro, 2025), 50 years old – retrospective at the Benedormiens Castle. The inauguration will be an act of recognition of the figure of the painter where friends, family, colleagues from the art world and institutional representatives will be present. During the act, a few words will be spoken in memory of his legacy, highlighting his creative coherence, his commitment to culture and his always restless and generous gaze. This temporary exhibition proposes an indispensable review of the career of the Aragonese painter.

The proposed route reveals three major phases, as milestones that mark key moments in this exploration. According to the historian and art critic, Víctor López Moya, “in this exhibition we enter a self-taught universe fueled by fundamental tensions: being in struggle with oppression, chaos that seeks its own geometry and matter that yearns to transcend itself. In short, a creative cosmos rooted in the rough landscapes of its homeland, but which surpasses them to become a poignant social critique and, little by little, a spiritual elevation; earthy aridity and, paradoxically, flight of the soul.

This is the playground of Encuentra, a territory where each work is the footprint of a journey that can be considered both personal and universal. ”For their part, the artist's family (Carme, Ester and Violeta) have commented that “this exhibition that he was preparing with so much enthusiasm and dedication, brings together 50 years of his professional career as a plastic artist. It is a sample of his creative path and his way of seeing the world”, and they add that “with great emotion and also with deep sadness, we invite you all to visit this exhibition of Miguel, who left us a few weeks ago. Despite not being able to physically share this moment, we know that this project was very important to him, and that is why we have carried it out with the utmost care and respect.” This exhibition constitutes an opportunity to rediscover and reclaim the role of Miguel Ángel Encuentra in the contemporary art scene, opening new paths for his critical reception and for future research in this field.
