At the end of April, at the age of 74, the painter Miguel Ángel Encuentra (Aliaga, Teruel, 1951 - Barbastro, 2025) died. Known as an abstract painter —especially for his abstract expressionist work—, he stood out for his intensive use of color and for the presence of philosophy and critical sense as essential foundations of his creation. Encuentra began his artistic career in the late sixties (1969), specifically in the field of painting, and lived intensely the cultural life of the seventies. He also dedicated himself to teaching, giving classes in Tauste (Zaragoza). Over time, he consolidated himself as a prominent voice within the contemporary panorama of the State.
His work has been exhibited throughout Spain, and one of his most outstanding exhibitions was the one he held at the Teruel Museum in 2020 entitled Negro Esperanza, which was a unique work divided into 21 fragments and for which he obtained the Grand Prize for the Most Outstanding Contemporary Aragonese Artist awarded by the Aragonese Association of Art Critics (AACA). In 2022 he also inaugurated an exhibition at the UNED in Barbastro, where he resided in his last years and also had his workshop installed.

It should be remembered that this past March 8, 2025 Encuentra inaugurated a temporary exhibition Visiones YI at the Sala Trinitaris in Vilafranca del Penedès, in which the artist proposed us to take a very deep visual journey on the complexity of identity and human interconnections, in which his technical mastery over canvas and paper could be appreciated. On this occasion, the artist created seascapes that presented a deep commitment to oriental art, one of his most significant influences.
With his disappearance, the cultural sector loses a much-loved figure in Aragon and Catalonia and a creative reference for abstract art, while family, friends and colleagues mourn the loss and remember his sensitivity, commitment and passion for the country's art.
