Jusèp Boya Busquet (Les, Vall d'Aran, 1960), historian and museologist with an extensive professional career, will cease to be director of the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia (MAC) as of May. Since joining the MAC at the end of 2018, Boya has been a key figure in the process of renovation and relaunch of the museum, with a vision focused on the dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary visual arts.

Boya, who holds a degree in geography and history from the University of Barcelona, specializing in medieval history, complemented his training with studies in museology and cultural heritage conservation at the University of Montreal. His career includes his time as director of the Museum of the History of Catalonia and as director general of Archives, Libraries, Museums and Heritage of the Generalitat of Catalonia since 2016. At the MAC, Boya promoted a new stage, with the aim of placing the museum in the context of contemporaneity and promoting a model that connects history with current creations.

This commitment to contemporaneity also included a new look at the history of the museum, which needed both a conceptual and museographic update after years of neglect in terms of investment. With a "glocal" vision, Boya defended the importance of articulating the heritage of Catalonia with the broader context of the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean, establishing bridges between local and global cultures. Exhibitions such as Imperium are an example of how the MAC has opted for new ways of presenting antiquity, breaking with traditional formats and offering a fresh and renewed look at the museum's collections.

With his departure, the Department of Culture has announced the call for a public competition to choose a new director for the MAC. The deadline for submitting candidacies will be 30 days. According to the Department, the process begins “within the framework of a new stage of this national facility, in order to face new challenges and continue to promote the renovation process already begun at the Barcelona headquarters and which must be extended to the rest of the museum's headquarters throughout Catalonia. This new stage must serve to develop programs in accordance with the Archaeology and Paleontology Plan of Catalonia.”

The beginning of this new stage, therefore, seeks to consolidate the role of the MAC as a key institution in the preservation, research and dissemination of the country's archaeological heritage, while maintaining the spirit of innovation and openness promoted by Boya.
