Irene Visa: the useless gesture

A work of research and material experimentation at Cultural Rizoma.

Irene Visa: the useless gesture

The artist from Banyoles, Irene Visa (Banyoles, 1985) presents her work 'El gest inútil', a proposal that explores the function of wedges, triangular-shaped objects that are usually used to fix two slightly separated volumes.

Throughout history, wedges have served to prevent unwanted movements, ensuring that nothing moves. In this sense, the author wants to highlight that any material can become a wedge, from a folded piece of paper to a piece of wood. More than the shape or material, what defines a wedge is the gesture and the way it is used. In this exhibition, which can be visited until February 23, Visa presents a series of porcelain wedges, a material that, due to its fragility, is unsuitable for its conventional function.

These custom-made pieces are intended to fix various elements, such as the megalithic constructions of the Alt Empordà, spaces of the La Mercè Cultural Center in Girona, doors of Girona institutions, a crack in Les Estunes in the Pla de l'Estany and even parts of the artist's body. This "useless gesture" underlines the functional uselessness of the porcelain wedges, transforming them into artistic objects.

The installation is completed with Visa's personal collection of wedges, collected over time, and a piece of gold paper that exhibits the marks resulting from the folding to wedge the access door to the Rizoma Cultural Space. Through this exhibition, Visa invites viewers to reflect on the functionality and transformation of everyday objects into art.
